Bethel Outreach

In 2006, three Kenyans living in one of Africa's largest urban slums began educating three small children. What began as a seed of faith has blossomed to become Bethel Outreach school which serves 350 children from preschool to grade six.

A fast track to nowhere

Kibera is an informal settlement (a.k.a. slum) in the city of Nairobi. Life in such an enviroment is governed by unsanitary and over-crowded living conditions, malnourishment, disease, lawlessness and violence. It is a place largely forgotten by the outside world, and there is little opportunity for a person to develop a proper sense of dignity when mere survival rules the day.

Broken homes, broken communities

Families in Kibera struggle to provide a proper foundation for their children. Unemployment is high. Those who are lucky enough to have jobs often work inconsistently as day laborers. Many people rely on commercial sex, or manufacture and sell illegal drugs and alcohol to earn money. With so much instability and lack of dignified work, many people turn to drugs or alcohol to dull the hopelessness, leaving the children who rely on them with no sense of security. To make matters worse, many children in Kibera are orphaned through AIDS or violence. The future for such a community looks grim.

Who can guide the children toward a better future?

When parents are unable to provide opportunities for their children, and the government's response to these "informal settlers" is lukewarm at best, then who will work to ensure a more stable and productive future for the children? In 2006, three adults dwelling in Kibera decided to act in faith to address this problem. Despite limiting resources, they humbly began educating three small children. Psalm 34 was their source of hope:

I sought the Lord and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.
This poor man called, and the Lord heard him; he saved him out of all his troubles.

Tending the garden with faith and hard work

As they labored in faith to teach their neighbor children, they watched God provide for them in miraculous ways. That seed of faith has taken firm root and it being well tended. Today Bethel Outreach Children's Center is a preschool and primary school serving about 350 students with vision to serve more students with better resources. By providing consistent education, nutrition and Biblical instruction, the children of this neighborhood have hope. Saba, International is pleased to partner with Bethel Outreach as they work to break the chains of poverty in body, mind and spirit. With expectancy we pray that God's grace will flourish these children for His glory!

Bethel Outreach Foundations

I will extol the Lord at all times; his praise will always be on my lips.

My soul will boast in the Lord; let the afflicted hear and rejoice.

Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together.

I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.

Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.

Psalm 34:1-5
